As a university level history teacher - history of science and technology no
less - I was fond of saying "there is nothing new under the sun." Happily , from
time to time , I am wrong about that ! This is one of those moments . I
learned to play guitar on an Ovation my wife bought for about $750.00 back
in 1980 . It's tone particularly when milked , was great - close to awesome as a
matter of fact . So good that a professional performer used it for years and
years in his act . Alas , he never de-tuned it when it flew , and my ex was not
the best maintenance person in the world . So when we split she kept the
Ovation , and it sort of deteriorated . Gradually the strings moved further and
further away from the neck . A person who thought they were a guitar tech
tried to fix it , making it even worse . In a word , it was unplayable !
That of course did
not stop my kid , who also learned to play on that Ovation and took it with
him to collage . He did ask me a few times if there was any thing I could do to
fix it , but I had tried with no luck . So I asked Darren Drew if there was
something he could do . After all he was a pro guitar tech .
He put his invention to
work - the something new under the sun - "Brace~ade" , and gave it back to
me . The result was mind
blowing . It not only brought the strings back down to the neck , but the
guitar felt , sounded , and played stronger than it ever had . It felt , and
played as a much more solid guitar than when I gave it to him .
It felt less like
an acoustic and more like a solid body electric guitar to play . I could use
much heavier picks , make my strums and picks much stronger , and the result
of that , as many players knows , is much louder , clearer , and stronger tone .
Where I had been using a .46 mm to a .75 mm nylon pick . I moved up to a
Jerry Garcia style 2.0 m graphite pick , and that thing just rang like a bell . IT
ROCKED ! I've been
doing tech work on rock concerts for over 30 years . I've had my hands on
lots of very nice guitars . Some of the very best in the world as a matter of fact
. But this one now plays in a way that no acoustic ever has in my hands . It
sounds so good , plays so well I can't believe it's the same guitar . The
"Brace~ade" was the best thing I have ever done for a guitar , other than
letting someone with talent play it . But it even made me sound better , and
you can't put a price tag on that .
The only negative thing was I had to send the Ovation back to my kid . Oh
well , Ya' can't win them all .
